Holy Angels Remembrance Program FAQs

Why does CFCS offer this program?
With the growth of cremation and in light of the Church's teaching regarding the proper disposition of cremated remains, it is our mission as a ministry of the Diocese of Oakland to offer a dignified and sacred resting place for all.

Are the remains retrievable?
Yes, remains can be disinterred from the remembrance crypt at no cost.

Can I have a memorial for a loved one?
Complimentary placement does not include memorialization; however, a cenotaph is available for inscription at all of the remembrance crypts for a small tax deductible fee.

Is there a tax deductible component to the cenotaph inscription?
Yes, the entire fee ($250 at Cemeteries or $1,000 at the Cathedral) is a donation that may be deductible.

What is the Church’s teaching?
The Church teaches that the cremated remains of the body be buried or entombed and receive the "Right of Committal." Scattering the remains, keeping them at home or dividing them among various family members is not the reverent disposition that the Church requires, "The bodies of the dead must be treated with respect and charity, in faith and hope of the Resurrection. The burial of the dead is a corporal work of mercy, it honors the children of God, who are temples of the Holy Spirit."

How long are the remains placed within the Holy Angels Crypt?
At the time of committal the remains are placed within the Holy Angels Crypt. In the future, based upon capacity, the remains may be relocated; however, they will always be interred within the consecrated grounds of Catholic Cemeteries.
